Petit Gateau; A Wedding Cake Review

In all honesty, it took a lot of ferocious Googling to find a wedding cake supplier that I liked the look of. I wanted somebody who could create some really special flavours rather than the fruit cake nightmare that is served at some weddings. I also wanted somebody who could create a cake that was absolutely one of a kind.

I contacted Jordana at Petit Gateau in April last year and went to meet with her at her lovely studio in Berkshire to discuss the design and the flavours. Jordana served a selection of flavours that we could taste during the design sessions to help us make a decision, and every single one of them was incredible. We tried some beautiful combinations of cake flavour and filling flavours and I knew immediately that I wanted to book Petit Gateau to provide my wedding cake.

 I chose 3 flavours, one for each tier:
  • Pink champagne sponge with fresh strawberry and cream filling
  • Vanilla bean sponge with a passionfruit buttercream filling
  • Honey sponge with a sweet honey buttercream filling

The cake that arrived at the venue on my wedding day was stunning. I can't count the number of people who have been in touch to find out where I got it from. It was light and moist and you could tell that it was freshly made rather than having been sat in a store cupboard for a week whilst it was being iced. Jordana had a huge selection of cake designs to choose from; once I had picked my preferred style she talked to me about customizing it to suit the wedding theme that I was working towards. She made it very easy for me to tie the theme in by discussing the number of sugar icing flowers I would like, the way they would be arranged, the number of tiers she recommended based on portion sizes and the colour of the cake tier icing. I decided that I would go for a floral theme, and it is worth noting that Jordana hand crafted each of these beautiful icing sugar flowers herself which is just amazing. I had told Jordana that I would be having eucalyptus in the bouquets so she included some lovely greenery that really tied the theme together. She also hand painted all of the flowers on the cake itself which looked gorgeous and also enabled me to have an ivory/minimalist cake without it looking boring or bare.


Petit Gateau had a wealth of information that was very handy to a first time wedding planner. For example, Jordana suggested that I get in contact with the florist and ask them to create a cake wreath to put around the cake stand at the base of the cake. Not being particularly cake or flower savvy, I had never heard of a floral cake wreath. The result, however, was astounding, and having the cake sat on a wreath of real, vibrant greenery was a total game changer.

Petit Gateau delivered the cake to the venue on the morning of the ceremony. There were never any issues, big or small, and I was never once stressed about the cake not turning up or not looking or tasting how I expected it to. The guests loved it and more importantly I loved it; that for me is absolutely value for money.

I would recommend Petit Gateau to anybody, and not just for wedding cakes either! I plan to ask Jordana for a selection of cupcakes/mini cakes made from the flavours we chose for the wedding cake as a first anniversary gift to myself. I was so busy on the day that I barely got to enjoy the cake, as I'm sure is the case for many brides! It is also worth mentioning that Jordana is running cake painting and decorating classes from her studio which I would seriously recommend for the budding baker. The design was so astounding that I can't imagine learning from anybody else would be anywhere near as good!
